How many laser hair removal sessions do you need?
Laser works on hair in its growth phase, and only some of your hair is growing at any one time. That’s why it takes a series, and why timing matters in a city as sunny as Calgary.

The short answer
Most people need 6 to 8 laser hair removal sessions for a lasting result, spaced about 4 to 6 weeks apart on the face and 6 to 8 weeks apart on the body. Hormonal areas like the chin and upper lip often need more.
Laser gives permanent hair reduction, not zero hair forever: most people keep a big, lasting reduction and book a touch-up once or twice a year.
Why one session isn’t enough
Hair grows in cycles: a growth phase, a short transition, and a resting phase before the hair sheds. Laser light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair and travels down to the follicle, and it works best on follicles in the active growth phase, while the hair is still attached to them.
At any given time, only part of the hair in an area is in that phase. Each session catches a new group of growing hairs. Spacing sessions to match your hair’s growth cycle is how a series treats all of them.
Sessions by area
| Area | Typical number of sessions | Usual spacing |
|---|---|---|
| Underarms | 6 to 8 | 4 to 6 weeks |
| Bikini or Brazilian | 6 to 8, sometimes more | 4 to 6 weeks |
| Legs | 6 to 8 | 6 to 8 weeks |
| Arms | 6 to 8 | 6 to 8 weeks |
| Back or chest | 6 to 8 or more | 6 to 8 weeks |
| Upper lip or chin | 8 or more | 4 to 6 weeks |
These are typical ranges, not promises. Your plan depends on your hair and skin, and your practitioner adjusts spacing as your hair slows down.
What affects how many sessions you’ll need
- Hair colour. Laser targets pigment, so dark hair responds best. Blonde, red, grey and white hair respond poorly or not at all.
- Hair thickness. Coarse hair usually clears faster than fine hair.
- Hormones. Facial hair, and hair affected by conditions such as PCOS, often needs more sessions and maintenance.
- Keeping to the schedule. Stretching sessions too far apart, or waxing in between, sets the series back.
Is laser hair removal permanent?
Laser gives permanent hair reduction: a lasting drop in the number of hairs that grow back. Treated follicles that were damaged enough stop producing hair. Some hair usually returns over time, and it tends to be finer and lighter. Many people are happy with a maintenance session once or twice a year after their series.
If you want every single hair gone, including light or grey hairs, electrolysis is the method that treats one follicle at a time. We compare the two in electrolysis vs laser hair removal.
When you’ll see results
Treated hairs usually shed one to three weeks after a session. Most people notice clearly less regrowth after two or three sessions, with the full result a few months after their last session.
Does laser hair removal hurt?
Most people describe it as a quick snap, like an elastic band against the skin, with a warm feeling afterwards. Sensitive areas like the upper lip and Brazilian area feel sharper, and each pulse is over in a moment. Cooling helps. Redness and a little swelling around the follicles usually settle within a day or two.
When to start in Calgary
Laser and a tan don’t mix. Tanned skin has more pigment competing with the hair, which raises the risk of burns and dark or light spots, so you need to keep treated areas out of the sun during your series. In Calgary that takes some planning: we get around 2,400 hours of sunshine a year, snow reflects most UV back at you on a bright winter day, and summer is short and full of patio and lake weekends.
Many Calgarians start in the fall. A series of six to eight sessions takes most of a year, so starting in September or October means the bulk of your treatments land in the months when your skin sees the least sun. Whatever the season, use SPF 30 or higher on treated areas.

Questions we hear
How long does a session take?
Small areas like the underarms or upper lip take minutes. At Mood, bikini and Brazilian laser sessions are each booked as 30-minute appointments, and larger areas take longer.
Can I shave between sessions?
Yes, shaving is fine and is the only hair removal you should do between sessions. Don’t wax, pluck, thread or use an epilator, because laser needs the root in place.
How many sessions for a Brazilian?
Usually 6 to 8, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Bikini-area hair tends to be dark and coarse, so it often responds well.
