Does microneedling hurt? What to expect, from numbing to healing
Most people are surprised by how manageable it is. Here’s what microneedling feels like, how long healing takes, how many sessions you’ll need and how long results last.

The short answer
Microneedling is mildly uncomfortable, not painful, for most people. A numbing cream goes on first, and during treatment it feels like pressure, light scratching and vibration, sharper over bony areas like the forehead and upper lip.
Afterwards your skin looks and feels like a mild sunburn for 1 to 3 days. Results build over a series of about 3 to 6 sessions, 4 to 6 weeks apart.
What microneedling is
Microneedling uses a pen fitted with a cartridge of very fine, sterile needles. As it glides over the skin, it makes thousands of tiny, controlled channels. Your skin responds by repairing them, which includes making new collagen and elastin. Over the following weeks, that helps smooth texture, soften fine lines and acne scars, and refine the look of pores.
Does microneedling hurt?
Here’s how a typical appointment feels:
- Numbing. A topical numbing cream sits on your skin for about 20 to 30 minutes.
- Treatment. The pen feels like pressure, a sandpapery scratch and a buzz. Cheeks are usually easy; the forehead, jawline and upper lip are more sensitive.
- Straight after. Skin feels warm, tight and flushed, like after a day in the sun.
Most people rate it as uncomfortable rather than painful, and the treatment itself is over quickly. Tell your practitioner how you’re doing; the depth can be adjusted area by area.
Healing, day by day
| When | What’s normal |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Redness and warmth, like a mild sunburn. Skin may feel tight. |
| Days 2 to 3 | Redness fades. Skin can feel dry or rough. |
| Days 3 to 7 | Some light flaking. Makeup and your usual routine return gradually. |
| Weeks 4 to 6 | Collagen keeps building. Time for the next session. |
Aftercare
- Keep skin clean and use a gentle moisturizer.
- Skip makeup for about 24 hours.
- Avoid heat and heavy sweating for a couple of days: saunas, steam rooms, hot yoga and hard workouts.
- Pause retinoids and exfoliating acids for about a week, or as advised.
- Wear SPF 30 or higher every day, and stay out of strong sun.
Does microneedling work?
For texture, fine lines and acne scarring, microneedling has good evidence behind it, especially over a full series. It’s gradual: you’ll often see a glow within a week, but collagen takes weeks to form, so the real change shows a month or more after each session, and the best result a few months after the last.
It isn’t a treatment for active acne. If you’re breaking out, get that under control first, because treating inflamed skin can spread bacteria and irritation.
How long do results last?
The collagen you build stays, but your skin keeps ageing. Many people hold their results for a long time with a maintenance session or two a year, plus daily sunscreen.
How often should you get microneedling?
Every 4 to 6 weeks during a series of about 3 to 6 sessions, then maintenance as your practitioner suggests. Closer than that doesn’t give your skin time to rebuild.
Microneedling vs RF microneedling
RF (radiofrequency) microneedling adds heat. Insulated needles deliver radiofrequency energy deeper into the skin, which adds a tightening effect on top of the collagen response. At Mood we use Potenza for RF microneedling, on the face and neck, and on body areas such as the abdomen and arms. Numbing and aftercare are similar, and your practitioner will suggest the right option for your goals.
Microneedling in Calgary: timing and skin care
Fall and winter suit microneedling best. Freshly treated skin is more sensitive to UV, and it’s easier to avoid strong sun from October to March, even with Calgary’s bright winter days and snow glare. Calgary’s dry air also means your skin barrier needs extra care while it heals: use a humidifier at night and a richer moisturizer than you’d use in summer.
If you’re booked for the sauna as part of a Mood. visit, save it for another day. Heat and freshly treated skin don’t mix.
Questions we hear
Can I wear makeup after microneedling?
Wait about 24 hours, then use clean brushes and gentle, non-irritating products.
Who shouldn’t have microneedling?
Skip it or check with us first if you have active acne or a skin infection, a cold sore flare, a skin condition in the area, or you’re pregnant, or if you’ve recently taken isotretinoin. We go through this at your consultation.
Is at-home microneedling the same?
No. At-home rollers use much shorter needles and aren’t sterile in the same way. Professional treatment is deeper, controlled and done in a clean clinical setting.
