How to remove gel nails at home, without wrecking your nails

The safe way is slow and a little boring: break the top coat, soak in acetone, and never peel. Here’s the method our nail techs would want you to use, and when to leave it to us.

The short answer

To remove gel polish at home: gently file off the shiny top coat, soak cotton in pure acetone, place it on each nail and wrap with foil, wait 10 to 15 minutes, then gently push the softened gel off with a wooden stick. Finish with cuticle oil.

Never peel or pry gel off. It pulls away layers of your natural nail. And if you have hard gel or extensions, book a removal: those need to be filed off, not soaked.

First: is it soak-off gel?

This method works for soak-off gel: gel polish from a gel manicure or pedicure, and some soft gel extensions. Hard gel (builder gel) and most gel sets don’t dissolve in acetone. They’re filed down by a technician, and trying to soak them for an hour only dries out your skin. If you’re not sure what you have, ask the salon that did them, or book a removal.

What you need

  • Pure acetone. Regular non-acetone remover won’t dissolve gel.
  • A nail file, around 180 grit, and a soft buffer.
  • Cotton pads, cut into small pieces.
  • Aluminum foil, cut into squares, or reusable removal clips.
  • An orange wood stick or a cuticle pusher.
  • Cuticle oil and a rich hand cream.
  • Petroleum jelly or a thick balm to protect the skin (optional).

How to remove gel nails at home, step by step

  1. Break the seal. Lightly file the shiny top layer of each nail until it looks dull. Just the shine; don’t file into your own nail.
  2. Protect your skin. Rub a little petroleum jelly or balm around each nail. Acetone is very drying.
  3. Soak and wrap. Soak a piece of cotton in acetone, place it on the nail and wrap it snugly in foil. Do one hand at a time if you like.
  4. Wait 10 to 15 minutes. Keep your hands warm, since warmth helps the acetone work. Put on a show.
  5. Check one nail. Unwrap it. The gel should look lifted, wrinkled or flaky. If it doesn’t, rewrap it for 5 more minutes.
  6. Push, don’t scrape. With the orange wood stick, gently push the softened gel toward the tip. It should slide off. If it resists, soak again.
  7. Buff lightly. Use the soft buffer to smooth any bits left behind. Don’t over-buff.
  8. Wash and nourish. Wash your hands, then apply cuticle oil and hand cream generously.

The bowl method

Some people soak their fingertips in a small glass bowl of acetone set inside a bowl of warm water. It’s faster, but it dries your skin out more. Foil wraps are gentler.

What not to do

  • Don’t peel, pick or pry. Peeling gel off takes the top layers of your nail plate with it. That’s the main reason people blame gel for weak nails.
  • Don’t file hard to speed things up. Once you’re through the gel, you’re filing your own nail.
  • Don’t use non-acetone remover, hot water and oil, or other hacks. They take far longer and usually end in scraping.

Can you remove gel nails without acetone?

Not properly. Gel is designed to resist ordinary remover, water and oil. Soaking in warm soapy water with oil can loosen a lifting edge, but the only reliable, gentle way to take soak-off gel off is acetone, or a professional removal.

After removal: let nails recover

  • Oil your cuticles every night.
  • Keep nails short while they recover, so thin tips don’t bend and split.
  • A clear strengthening polish or a gel overlay can protect nails while they grow out.

In Calgary, acetone plus dry air is a lot for your hands, especially in winter. Be generous with cuticle oil and hand cream for a few days after any removal.

When to leave it to us

Book a removal if you have hard gel, extensions or overlays, if your gel won’t lift after two soaks, or if your nails already feel thin or sore. At Mood, gel removal is booked as an hour, so there’s no rushing. Then you can choose a fresh set, or a break.

Questions we hear

How long does it take to remove gel nails at home?

Plan on 30 to 45 minutes for both hands, including the soak and aftercare.

Can I remove gel polish with regular nail polish remover?

Only if it’s pure acetone. Non-acetone removers barely touch gel.

How do I take shellac off?

Shellac is a brand of soak-off gel polish, so the same method works: file the shine, soak in acetone, and push it off gently.

Book gel removal instead

Gel removal at Mood is booked as an hour, so there’s time to take it off gently and leave your nails tidy, ready for a fresh set or a break.
