How long do gel nails last?
About two to three weeks on your fingers, and often a month or more on your toes. Here’s what makes gel last, when to book a fill, and how to keep your nails healthy underneath.

The short answer
A gel manicure usually lasts 2 to 3 weeks without chipping. A gel set (extensions or an overlay) needs a fill every 2 to 3 weeks as your natural nail grows out. Gel pedicures often last 4 weeks or more, because toenails grow more slowly.
What usually ends a gel manicure isn’t chipping but regrowth: the gap at the cuticle.
How long each type of gel lasts
| Service | Usually lasts | Next appointment |
|---|---|---|
| Gel polish on natural nails (gel manicure) | 2 to 3 weeks | Removal and a fresh set, or a refresher |
| Gel overlay or builder gel | 2 to 3 weeks before a fill | Fill |
| Gel extensions (new set) | 2 to 3 weeks before a fill | Fill |
| Gel pedicure | 4 weeks or more | Removal and a fresh pedicure |
Gel polish vs regular polish
| Gel polish | Regular polish | |
|---|---|---|
| Dries | Instantly, cured under a lamp | 30 minutes or more to fully harden |
| Lasts | 2 to 3 weeks | A few days to a week |
| Finish | High gloss that stays glossy | Dulls and chips over days |
| Removal | Acetone soak, done gently | Any polish remover |
Regular polish is the easy choice for a week or a quick change. Gel is for when you want nails that still look fresh at the end of week two.
What makes gel last longer
- Prep. Clean, dry, well-prepped nails are the foundation of a long-lasting set.
- Your hands. Nails used as tools (opening cans, scraping labels) chip and lift sooner.
- Water. Long soaks, dishes and hot tubs soften the nail underneath. Wear gloves for cleaning.
- Cuticle oil. Daily oil keeps the nail and skin flexible, so gel is less likely to lift at the edges.
- Not picking. Once a corner lifts, leave it. Picking pulls up layers of your nail with it.
Do gel nails damage your nails?
The gel itself doesn’t. Most damage comes from:
- Peeling or picking gel off. It takes the top layers of the nail with it, leaving nails thin and bendy.
- Over-filing the natural nail, during application or removal.
- Skipping proper removal, or wearing gel back to back with no care in between.
With good application and gentle removal, many people wear gel for years without problems. If your nails feel thin, a gel overlay or builder gel can actually protect them while they grow.
What about the UV lamp?
Curing lamps give off UV light for a short time. If you’d like to limit it, apply sunscreen to your hands beforehand or wear fingerless gloves during curing.
Gel nails and Calgary’s climate
Dry air is the enemy of a good manicure. In Calgary, furnace heat, winter gloves and chinook winds leave cuticles dry and ragged, and dry nails flex and lift more easily. A drop of cuticle oil every night keeps gel looking fresh for its full two to three weeks, and hand cream after every wash helps too.
For Stampede, patio season and holiday parties, book your gel two or three days ahead, so you’re not rushing and your nails look their best on the day.

Questions we hear
How long does a gel manicure take?
About 75 minutes at Mood. A new gel set takes about 90 minutes, and so does a fill.
Can I get a gel refresher instead of a full manicure?
Yes. A gel refresher replaces the colour without a full manicure. Both hands and toes can be booked online.
Which gel brands does Mood use?
OPI, Luxio and Egoista. Luxio is made in Vancouver, and Egoista is a Calgary brand.
Why does my gel lift early?
Common causes are oils on the nail at application, nails that are very dry or flexible, and daily soaking. If it keeps happening, tell your technician so they can adjust your prep.
Book a gel manicure
A gel manicure at Mood takes about 75 minutes, with shaping, cuticle care and a glossy finish that lasts. Gel pedicures are on the menu too.
