Nails
Acrylic vs gel nails: which is better?
Both add strength and length. The differences are in how they feel, how they’re removed and what they do to your natural nails. Here’s how to choose.

The short answer
Acrylic nails are made by mixing a liquid and a powder into a paste that hardens in the air. They’re very strong and suit long, dramatic nails, but they’re thicker and harder to remove.
Gel nails are a gel painted on and cured under a UV or LED lamp. They’re lighter, more flexible and glossier, and they look more natural. For most people, and especially for weak or thin nails, gel is the gentler, more natural-looking choice.
How acrylic nails are made
Your technician dips a brush into a liquid (the monomer), then into a powder (the polymer). The two form a bead of paste that’s shaped onto your nail or a tip, where it hardens as it dries. It’s then filed and buffed into shape and finished with polish.
Acrylic is very hard, which makes it good for long extensions and for people who are tough on their hands. It’s also rigid, so a hard knock tends to crack the acrylic or lift it from the nail rather than bend. The liquid has a strong smell.
How gel nails are made
Gel comes in a jar or bottle and is applied like a thick polish, then cured (hardened) under a UV or LED lamp, a minute or two per layer. There are two main kinds:
- Soft gel (soak-off gel), which includes gel polish and some gel extensions. It can be removed with acetone.
- Hard gel (builder gel), which is stronger and used to build length or reinforce nails. It’s filed off rather than soaked.
Gel is lighter and more flexible than acrylic. It has a high-gloss finish, little to no smell, and looks closer to a natural nail.
Acrylic vs gel nails, side by side
| Acrylic | Gel | |
|---|---|---|
| Made from | Liquid and powder that harden in the air | Gel cured under a UV or LED lamp |
| Feel | Thicker, rigid | Thinner, lighter, flexible |
| Look | Strong, can look heavier | Glossy, natural |
| Smell | Strong during application | Mild or none |
| Strength | Very strong, best for long lengths | Strong and flexible |
| Lasts | Fill every 2 to 3 weeks | Fill every 2 to 3 weeks |
| Removal | Long acetone soak or filing | Soak-off gel: acetone; hard gel: filed |
Which is better for weak nails?
Gel, in most cases. A thin gel overlay or builder gel reinforces a weak nail without much weight, and it bends a little with your natural nail instead of levering against it. What damages weak nails most is removal: prying, peeling or over-filing. With either system, have them removed properly. We explain how in how to remove gel nails at home.
Which lasts longer?
Both usually go 2 to 3 weeks before a fill, because your natural nail grows out underneath. Acrylic is slightly more resistant to hard knocks, and gel is less likely to crack from bending. How long they look fresh depends more on your hands and habits than on the product. See how long gel nails last.

Nails in a dry Calgary winter
Calgary’s dry air, winter gloves and long furnace season make nails brittle and cuticles ragged, which shows around fresh gel. A few habits keep your set looking good:
- Cuticle oil every night, the single biggest difference you can make.
- Hand cream after washing, and gloves for cleaning and dishes.
- Book fills on time, before lifting gets worse.
Questions we hear
Is gel or acrylic better for long nails?
Acrylic is traditionally used for very long, dramatic lengths. Hard gel extensions handle most lengths well and feel lighter.
Do gel nails damage your nails?
Gel itself doesn’t. Damage comes from peeling gel off, aggressive filing and skipping proper removal.
Can I switch from acrylic to gel?
Yes. Have your acrylics removed properly, give your nails a short break if they’re thin, then start with a gel overlay.
